Here is a pdf of Clean Energy Ventures' DEI Survey Tool. This tool was first fielded to CEV and CEVG portfolio companies in January 2021 and is open for portfolio companies to use as they'd like in the future. Ted Dillion can provide an interactive survey link if needed.

Common Qs & As for CEV/G DEI Survey for Climate Tech Startups

Updated 1.7.2021

Q: Why is CEV/G conducting this survey?

A: We (CEV and CEVG) believe companies that pay attention to issues of diversity and inclusion are doing right by their employees and their communities, and setting themselves up for stronger financial performance. As such, we’ve created this tool with an outside consultant to give our portfolio companies the resources they need to focus and improve on this issue.

This survey will 1) give the companies we care about the most (you!) an important set of data to benchmark Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) across their organization and set a foundation for improvement, 2) give CEV/G an understanding of the diversity across our portfolio companies, so we can create tools to help enhance diversity across organizations, 3) allow us to share select diversity information publicly (in aggregate) to encourage other VCs and clean energy leaders to pay attention to this issue, too.

Q: What are the focus areas of the survey?

A: This survey is focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We ask demographic information related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status and more. We ask team members to share their level of awareness and understanding of your company’s internal diversity and inclusion policies and programs. We ask team members to assess their sense of inclusion within their organization.

Q: Is the survey confidential?

A: Individual information provided in this survey is confidential. We are not collecting names, email addresses, or similarly identifiable contact information. Individual responses will only be accessible by our outside third-party consultant and CEV survey manager. Company CEOs and leadership teams will not be granted access to individual results. We realize that companies with fewer employees may have extra concerns about anonymity; we will do our very best to anonymize data within the context of the organizations’ size.

Q: How will results be shared?

A: Data will be aggregated for individual organizations, and for CEV & CEVG portfolios. Aggregate company data will be shared with that company. Aggregate CEV and CEVG portfolio data on company diversity only will be shared with every company that participates, and will be made publicly available. CEV hopes to share diversity statistics on our website to encourage other venture capital and clean energy companies to focus on issues of diversity. We will share this data with portfolio company leadership in advance of publishing. We are not publishing data related to equity and inclusion within each organization or in aggregate.

Q: Who is eligible to participate in the survey?

A: All full-time employees, board members, advisory board members and important consultants of your company are eligible to complete this survey. Individual participation is completely optional, but highly encouraged. Every demographic question includes an opt-out answer (“prefer not to answer”) and we are not collecting names, email addresses, or similarly identifiable contact information.

Q: Is the survey available in multiple languages?

A: The survey is currently available in english, as all CEV/G portfolio companies use english as their primary operating language. If you have employees whose primary language is one other than English we’re happy to make translations available. Please reach out to Ted Dillon, [email protected].
